A teenager has died and his passenger has been seriously injured in a crash on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The 18-year-old had been driving his blue Mazda along Frogston Road West at about 2145 BST on Tuesday when he hit a tree near Mounthooley Loan junction.

After being cut free, along with his passenger, the teenager was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

His passenger remains in a critical condition in the Western General Hospital.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the Fairmilehead area on Tuesday night, and witnessed the collision, or who saw the blue Mazda being driven in the area before the collision took place, to contact police immediately.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist our inquiries should also get in touch."
