A security worker is in hospital after an escaped prisoner allegedly stole a car and ran him over.

The 24-year-old is said to have made off from custody outside St Leonard’s Police Station in the Newington area of the city at around 8.15am on Thursday.

He then allegedly forced a 24-year-old driver to stop her car on Holyrood Park Road, before threatening her, stealing her car and driving at the Reliance security worker.

The 29-year-old Reliance worker is now being treated for leg and chest injuries at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Lothian and Borders Police stopped the driver on Primrose Street after the vehicle hit and bollard and overturned.

The suspect has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with minor injuries to his face and will be taken into police custody when he is released.

The woman driving the Ford Fiesta was not injured.

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call them on 0131 311 3131 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
