Miranda Harvey restricts her public appearances to the odd appearance by the side of Ian Rankin as he collects yet another award.

But yesterday she stepped out of the shadows of her crime-writing other half to help lift the lid on the conditions at her son Jack's school in Edinburgh.

Before all 58 of Edinburgh's councillors, she delivered a stinging criticism of the conditions at her son's high school in one of the city's most affluent areas.

Ms Harvey told councillors she was "ashamed of my city and ashamed of myself as a parent" over the state of Boroughmuir High. She was one of several parents to speak of their dismay at discovering long-awaited plans to either rebuild or refurbish four schools had been put on hold indefinitely.
