City of Edinburgh Council is to take an innovative new curriculum-led
approach to designing two schools in the city. James Gillespie’s and
Portobello High Schools will be developed with the input of a ‘pedagogic

of Curriculum for Excellence - the first time the approach has been used
in Scotland.

"Viva Vox is beautifully written, cleverly structured and
has taken a minimalist but very intelligent approach to design.

"The

very difficult time and may have to close. It's therefore a rather
bittersweet triumph but a very well deserved win for the team from St

running into financial difficulties.

At the magazine award
ceremony, held at the Our Dynamic Earth science centre in Edinburgh on
Friday, Keith Brown, the schools minister, presented the gold, silver
and bronze awards to the other winners.

The Scottish School

School, Western Isles.

Mr Brown described the standard of
entries as high. He said: "Being involved in a school magazine
contributes to the development of important skills which are all
relevant to life beyond school.

"The support by PPA Scotland,

Moredun will have its own ice rink. Or maybe a roller disco.

There’s always been more to Moredun Library than merely issuing books
(although we do that too of course!). On Friday June 17th,
one of our youth groups attended the first Liberton/Gilmerton
Neighbourhood Partnership meeting about engaging young people.

For the event at Valley Park Community Centre, the group of six girls
wrote, filmed and starred in a film about spare time activities in
Moredun, with support from Phil and Emma in the library. The film was
then shown, along with others from Liberton Kirk, Gracemount High School
and the Liberton Gilmerton Youth Forum, at an event with lots of local
representatives from the South of Edinburgh with a view to seeing what
else can be done in the area to engage with young people.

Our film is called ‘A Moredun Dream’ and tells the dramatic story of a
girl named Christine who wants to go ice skating, but isn’t allowed.
Her mother says she us too young to go all the way to the rink at
Murrayfield on her own, and mean big sister Justine won’t take her. It
is a tale of true adversity and more than that, it’s just not fair!

However, Christine is not beaten yet. She can’t go ice skating
because it’s too far away, so why not bring the ice skating here? Or,
because that’s a big ask, what about a mobile roller disco that could be
hosted in different venues around the area once a month? News
reporter Julia Quinn introduces interviews with the local community
about their take on the situation, but whilst they think it’s a great
idea, there are some rather boring adult reservations about staffing,
flooring and health and safety.

After showing the film, the girls gave a short presentation
explaining that most of these barriers could be overcome by booking a
mobile roller disco. This is because they provide their own staff with
health and safety training and a special floor that can go over the top
of existing flooring, or even be set up in a car park. The group asked

Caring students from Edinburgh Global Partnerships (EGP) gave up their spare time recently to raise a cuppa with Edinburgh veterans.

EGP is a charity run by students from the University of Edinburgh that aims to offer assistance by fundraising for, and volunteering in, sustainable community-led development projects overseas.

As part of this commitment, the students wanted to do more to help in their local community so they offered to lend a hand at the newest fundraising event launched by the veterans’ charity Erskine – the Great Scottish Tea Party.

They visited the Erskine Edinburgh Home on Monday 17th May to spend an afternoon befriending and sharing a cuppa with some of the 76 veterans cared for by the veterans’ charity in Scotland’s capital. The event was also a chance for the charity to encourage its supporters to sign up for Erskine’s Great Scottish Tea Party which aims to raise vital funds for Erskine.

John Fyfe, Erskine fundraiser, said: “We were delighted that the students from the Edinburgh Global Partnership gave up their time to volunteer at our tea party recently. We were honoured to receive the kind donation from Fraser who certainly tickled our resident’s taste buds with his donation of SuperJam. It was the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate how easy it can be to raise money for Erskine through our Great Scottish Tea Party, so we are encouraging more people to Raise a Cuppa and Raise a Pound for Erskine.”
Veterans at the
Erskine Edinburgh
Home have been celebrating the 65th anniversary of VE Day by
replicating a 1940s street party.

After Prime Minister
Winston
Churchill announced the end of the war in Europe, more than one million
people
took to the streets of Britain to celebrate the surrender of Hitler’s
Army on
the 8th May 1944.

Many communities,
despite strict
rationing still being in force, organised street parties which are now
regarded
as one of the most iconic scenes of WWII.

The Erskine Edinburgh
Home, run
by the veterans’ charity Erskine, threw homage to the momentous occasion
by
re-living VE Day, 65 years on with a celebration party.

Veterans and their
families were
taken back in time thanks to decorations which included bunting, British
flags,
war time posters, as well as 1940s-inspired food that included treacle
tart,
clootie dumpling and boiled sweeties.

Staff also took part
in the
celebrations, dressing up in replica uniforms from WWII and arranged an
afternoon of VE Day entertainment.

Lynn Suttie, Erskine
Edinburgh
Home manager, said: “We were delighted that our residents were able to
re-live
such a historical moment at our care home. They all thoroughly enjoyed
the
opportunity to reminisce the end of the war in Europe, as many of them
can
remember exactly where they were when the announcement was made. The
Erskine Edinburgh Home prides itself on organising activities which are
residents can relate to and nothing was more fitting than our VE Day
celebration.”

I am writing as we enter polling day in the UK and in Edinburgh South.
It has been a tremendous pleasure to have represented Edinburgh South
for the last 23 years as my tenure as the MP ends tomorrow. It has been
an honour to represent my constituents and I am delighted that one of
our hardest-working Labour Councillors, Ian Murray, is our Labour
Candidate. Ian and I have be campaigning enthusiastically over the
last 6 weeks and I have never been involved in a campaign that had such
energy, commitment and the desire to do well in order to continue to
represent Edinburgh South. As well as being an effective councillor
over the past 7 years, Ian runs a local small business and has a wealth
of experience representing local people and seeking the improvements in
local services that we all desire. Ian has raised hundreds of thousands
of pounds for charities that support ‘A Landmine Free World’ and a
school building project in Nepal, proving Ian’s commitment to the less
fortunate, both in South Edinburgh and abroad.

Many of you will have met Ian in the last 6 weeks, attended a hustings
or been involved in one of his many unique public meetings. Everyone
that meets him recognises his compassion, values and abilities. He is a
warm, dedicated and passionate person who wants to do well for
everyone.

Ian has worked tirelessly with thousands of local residents on many
campaigns and serious issues, including fighting the cuts imposed on our
local schools by the Liberal-Democrat-run Council, opposing their
decision to abolish free garden aid for disabled people, fighting their
cuts in services for senior citizens and their failure to invest in
re-opening the South Suburban railway stations to take up to 1.4 million
people off our roads. Ian helped pioneer local community policing paid
for by the Council, the regeneration of our council homes, the
protection and enhancement of our green spaces and improved access to
health services. He has always stood up strongly for our local schools.
  The list goes on.

I am proud of the achievements that the Labour Government and our local
Labour team have made in South Edinburgh from, building new schools,
community centres, hospitals and health centres to record employment for
the area. A lot has been done in South Edinburgh but there is still
much more to do to continue the improvements made in our community,
which can only be done by investment not cuts.

We have worked together very closely over the last 23 years and I am
proud of what we have achieved together. Ian shares my passion for
public service and will make a wonderful MP if elected.

If Ian can help you with any problems, please do not hesitate to contact
him at the details below. I very much hope you will join me in voting
for Ian on today. He deserves our wholehearted support.

Very best wishes,

Yours sincerely,
It provides pupils with an opportunity to learn about philanthropy as well as a genuine experience to directly assist a charity in their community.

In small teams pupils were given the task of analysing the social needs of the local community and identifying what they considered to be the most pressing issue. After completing their research they chose a local, grass roots charity that they wanted to represent. Pupils went out into the community to find out about the work of the charities, to see where they were based and to meet with those involved with the charity.

The teams were then in competition with each other to secure a grant, provided by The Wood Family Trust, for their chosen charity. In front of their RME class they had to give a presentation on the work of their charity and a member of the Senior Leadership Team had the difficult task of selecting one team to go through to the final.

The six teams of finalists had only one more step to go. They each had to convince the panel of judges made up of Lorraine Legrix, our Head Teacher, pupil and parent council representatives that their charity was most deserving of the grant. It was not an easy decision to make.

The YPI winners for Holy Rood High School proudly presented a cheque for £3000 to the representatives from East Lothian Young Carers a charity which provides support and opportunities for carers aged between 5 and 24. A fifth year from the winning team said, “I was ecstatic at winning. It took a lot of hard work but it was worth it to be able to help people our own age who help other people all of the time.”

They say you shouldn't run until you can walk. So little Hector Eccles is sensibly waiting until just after his third birthday before taking part in the Mini Great Edinburgh Run.

The toddler, from the Grange, will be the youngest participant when he starts the race in Holyrood Park, with his parents and big brother Archie, on Sunday 2 May.

                      Parents
of children at South Morningside Primary have been campaigning for
years to get money to address the overcrowding problems, which mean many
children have to eat lunch in classrooms, miss out on lunchtime play
and also fail to meet national targets which say they should do two hours of
PE every week.

They have finally been told of the "positive
result" that will see the school prioritised for an extension, but this
is likely to be several years away as the council's capital budget for
projects such as this is fully committed until 2014.

Full story from Edinburgh Evening News

<sites:pageName>crowdedschooltogetextensionbutwhen</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>

Coming soon: cinema that'll put the BIG into big screen

follows a test screening of Mamma Mia! last year.

It will pay

after fighting testicular cancer that threatened to ruin his taekwondo
career.

Former Hearts FC
and Dunfermline Athletic
player Peter Pryde became the European veteran champion at finals in
Italy earlier this month.

He celebrated the win on his 42nd birthday earlier this month after
undergoing radiotherapy for the cancer he was diagnosed with two years
ago.

Peter, a joiner at Napier
University, has been passionate about the sport for the past eight
years after taking it up to keep fit when he retired from professional
football.

Best Veteran Team

And the sport runs in the family, with Peter’s wife Lynne, 45,
recently achieving a black belt while his step-sons Liam, 13 and Peter,
15, starting to learn the basics.

As well as the championship title, Peter won three gold and two
silver medals at the competition in Barletta on March 14.

They were just some of the awards bagged by the Scottish team, who
were voted Best Veteran Team in Europe as well as bagging a total of six
gold, nine silver and 13 bronze medals.

He said: “I started taekwondo when I finished playing football eight
years ago. I wanted to do something that would keep me fit and flexible.

“The sport is just as good for my fitness as football, if not
better.”

“Real shock”

But his budding martial arts career was threatened by his diagnosis
just three days before Christmas in 2008.

Despite undergoing an operation to remove the tumour in January 2009
and a gruelling course of radiotherapy in March of the same year, Peter
credits the disease for his winning streak.

He said: “I was diagnosed with cancer a few days before Christmas in
2008 and it was a real shock to the system.

“You only ever tend to read about these things and never think this
is going to happen to you.

“Although I was in complete shock of being diagnosed, and then having
to think about the orchiectomy and the radiotherapy, the main thing
going through my mind was what a set back it was going to be for me in
my taekwondo.

“It was my passion for the last eight years and the thought of it
being taken away from me all of a sudden was a scary one.”

“Get back to my best”

But he received the all-clear after his radiotherapy and is
celebrating a glorious return to the sport after being picked in January
for the Scottish team at the European championships.

Peter has also bagged six golds, four silvers and one bronze in
national martial arts competitions since his recovery.

Peter – from the Liberton area of Edinburgh – said: “I still go for
check-ups and won’t get the final all-clear for another five years.

“But this is the first year that I have been able to get back to
taekwondo properly since I was diagnosed.

“After my treatment, I began to do light stretching with the help of
my instructor, Frank Lindsay.

“I wanted to be back to my best right away and often got ahead of
myself but Frank was really good in reining me back, so that I got back
to full fitness properly.

“I think that it’s important for everyone to have a hobby they enjoy,
but for me, my taekwondo really was my life saver during the early
stages of my cancer diagnosis.”

“Catch my eye”

And taekwondo hasn’t just given Peter the strength to fight cancer –
he met his wife through the sport.

He said: “It was love at first punch. Anyone who could deliver a
punch quicker than me was always going to catch my eye,”

Peter still has to go for regular check ups to make sure that the
cancer has not returned, but he is hopeful that he has a bright future.

He said: “I am hoping to go back to the European Championships in
Russia next year and defend my title.

Centre.

Aiming
to generate finds for Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon
Foundation, more than 16,000 swimmers are set to take part across the
UK, raising more than £1.5m. Funds will go towards helping Marie Curie
to provide free nursing care to cancer patients and other terminal ill people, in
their own homes.

Now in its 24th year, over half a million
swimmers have taken part in Swimathon – swimming the equivalent of over
24 times round the world and raising over £30 million for charity.

Swimathon
President Duncan Goodhew said: "Gracemount Leisure Centre deserves an
enormous amount of credit for so successfully engaging 32 local swimmers
in what is a considerable challenge.

"Many of these people have
committed to swim 5km - or 200 lengths of a 25m pool. What they'll
achieve personally and for the charities is also worth celebrating."

Local
swimmers can still dive into Swimathon at Ainslie Park Leisure Centre,
Drumbrae Leisure Centre and Portobello Swim Centre between 16-18 April
2010.

To find out more go to www.swimathon.org
