Police search for guns and drugs at Edinburgh home

A large-scale search was launched today for guns and drugs which may have been stashed in the garden of a suburban home. Police officers are combing the area in the Inch area of the Capital, as part of a crackdown on serious organised crime.

Lothian and Borders Police said the operation in Cumnor Crescent and Rutherford Drive was launched when officers received a tip-off.

The search areas were cordoned off and leaflets were handed out to people in the area about the operation, which involves around 40 officers.

A spokesman for the force said: "Throughout the day we will be actively engaging with residents in order to seek permission for access to their property, and we will aim to cause as little disruption as possible.

"At this time we are acting on information that firearms and drugs may be hidden within a garden in the area, possibly without the knowledge of the homeowner.

"However we are keen for any new information that can assist our inquiries, and rest-assured that anyone who contacts us will be treated in the strictest of confidence.

"Today's activity should be taken as a warning to criminals across Edinburgh that there are no safe havens in which they can operate, and that we will actively pursue them wherever they are based."
