Police are hunting two vicious dogs who savaged a man and his pet Scottie dog as they took an afternoon stroll in the park. The attack was so violent it knocked Jimmy Stuart, 50, to the ground despite his 16-stone frame. The painter and decorator suffered several bites to his leg and two broken fingers, while his Scottish terrier Wallace was left badly injured.

The incident follows a spate of dog attacks across Edinburgh in recent months and today sparked fresh calls for a crackdown on owners who let their pets run wild.

The two dogs – one of which resembled a Staffordshire bull terrier – attacked Mr Stuart and Wallace in Liberton Gardens at around 4:40pm on Wednesday.

Mr Stuart, who lives at Gracemount with his wife Rachel, had to be taken to the ERI for treatment and said he may not be able to work for weeks.
