Siege (Pic: Colin Tate) Armed police have been deployed in central Edinburgh, after a man believed to be armed with a sword had barricaded himself in a flat.

Officers trying to negotiate with the man entered the building in Roxburgh Street and a man was detained.

An armed response unit was called earlier after a woman from the flat was seen outside, in a distressed state.

Neighbours were advised to leave their homes and keep clear of the immediate area, and some roads were sealed off.

Police said the operation began at about 1020 BST.

Neighbours in the housing association flats, just off the Pleasance, were advised to leave their homes and stay away from the immediate area.
