Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a woman had her handbag stolen in the Capital at the weekend.

The incident happened around 00.20am on Sunday (April 24), at Causewayside.

The 54-year-old victim had left the Borough Hotel with her husband and was walking north on Causewayside when the suspect grabbed her handbag and tried to pull it from her shoulder.

She held on to the bag and fell over, and was pulled a short distance before losing her grip. The victim's husband attempted to grab hold of the suspect, however he made off down a small alleyway leading from Causewayside to Sciennes, and turned left, heading south on Sciennes.

He is described as white, early to mid 20s, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 9ins tall, with a slim build, short hair, and stubble. He was wearing a white or cream tracksuit.

A police spokesman said: 'As well as being left extremely shaken, the victim suffered bruising to her leg as a result of being dragged by the suspect, and we are appealing for any information that can help us identify him.

'Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who was in the area at the time and saw the suspect there, should contact police.

'Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect, or who has any other information that can help our inquiries, should also get in touch.'

Anyone with information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
