A young student has been killed and his girlfriend left fighting for her life after a road accident in south Edinburgh.

Jack Chan, 18, was driving eastwards in a blue Mazda along Frogston Road West, Fairmilehead, when his vehicle left the road and struck a tree on Tuesday night.

Both he and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Emily Chan, were taken to hospital, but Jack died in the early hours yesterday.

The pair had to be cut free from the vehicle after the accident, which happened near the Klondyke Garden Centre.

The crash happened yards from Ms Chan's family home in the Mortonhall area. She is thought to be the daughter of Thomas Chan, the owner of the Chinatown restaurant in Edinburgh's West End.
