Staff at a South Edinburgh café-based project that supports the elderly and those with special needs have expressed their gratitude to local businesses and people who helped to make a recent raffle a great success.

Sandra Dixon of the Open Door, Morningside Road, has thanked everyone who contributed, as proceeds were still being counted at the time of going to print.

She said, “In this time of fear and recession it is nice to know that local community spirit is strong and that giving to others less fortunate is still top of peoples shopping lists.

“We would also like to thank Waitrose once again for their continued support of the Open Door and for the donation of  £400. This money was a representation of the vote of the local people of Morningside during Waitrose’s Community Matters project, where each month three different charities are nominated to receive a proportion of £1,000.”

The Open Door provides an inexpensive, warm and friendly coffee shop, day care services, social activity groups, and carer respite and support.

There are over eighty volunteers who give up their time to support the project and without whom these services would not be able to function.
