An engineer woke up in an Edinburgh guest house to be confronted by a gun-wielding robber in his room.

Gyn Ashley, 36, watched as robber Paul Alexander rifled through his possessions in his room at the Abbey Lodge Guest House in Gilmerton.

A judge praised Mr Ashley's quick thinking for helping police catch Alexander red-handed.

When Alexander, 37, picked up bank cards, Mr Ashley told him they could only be used at a particular branch of Lloyds TSB.

Police staked out the bank in Dalkeith, Midlothian, and watched as Alexander struggled to operate the ATM there. He was also wearing Mr Ashley's beige designer jacket over his hoodie.
