• Budding Scholars
Fifteen pupils in first year are about to embark on Edinburgh University's Widening Access programme. They will be undertaking a series of visits to various places such as the Royal Observatory and the Faculty of Advocates, rounding it off with a presentation to parents and invited guests.
• Budding Leaders
Fifth year pupils enjoyed a presentation from Outward Bound in early March about the Mark Scott Leadership for Life Award. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to pursue this award in sixth year, gaining invaluable skills and developing as individuals along the way.
• Internet Safety
An internet safety training session for parents in South Edinburgh is planned for April/May. Further details will appear in May's edition of The Echo.
• Chamber Choir
Well done to pupils Cecily Kingston and Ian McBain who recently performed with the Edinburgh's School Chamber Choir at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.
• Bottles and Bottles!
Earlier this session some of us at Liberton noted that there were a lot of plastic bottles around! Subsequently, we launched a campaign named Reduce Your Carbon Footprint was launched to encourage plastic bottle recycling. The campaign continues to be very successful.
• Liberton High School Golf Club
During this year's activity week, ten Liberton pupils will travel to the beautiful Isle of Arran for a golfing tour. During four days there it is hoped they will complete a marathon seven golf courses... and negotiate their way round Brodick putting green!
Fundraising for the trip is already underway: if you would like to contribute, please contact Mr Hutchison at the school.
• No Place to Hyde
There was 'no place to Hyde' in Liberton as we took part in the City of Literature 'One Book, One Edinburgh' citywide reading campaign.
The Strange Case of Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde sparked everyone's imagination as first and second year pupils took part in a variety of activities to celebrate one of Stevenson's most famous novels.
• Minority
The band Minority – comprising pupils Michael Selkirk, Liam Allison, Callum Munro and Ross Hunter - was invited to return to the Sound Café recording studio to work on their own original song for the day. It has been suggested that the song may be used as part of Edinburgh City Council's anti-bullying campaign.
• Fizzy drinks
Thanks to everyone who responded to the item in last month's Echo bulletin. The feedback received by the school supported a ban of fizzy drinks in school grounds. The consumption of fizzy drinks will be banned following the Easter break. Support of all parents is sought in encouraging pupils to choose a healthier option.
• Hockey
The school hockey team has enjoyed great success this year. Games have been played against a wide range of teams and Liberton recently pitted their wits against a touring team from Hertfordshire and Essex, performing well in a narrow defeat. Details of the staff v pupils game will appear in March's edition of The Echo.
• Music Exam Success
Congratulations to Yi Yi Whitchelo who recently sat her Associated Board of the Royal School of Music exam for Guitar. Yi passed with distinction.
• Curry Lunch
Third and fifth year hospitality pupils successfully cooked up delicious curries for staff to raise money for the school charity.
Liberton High School is supporting four children in different parts of the world who have very little resources compared to us in Scotland. It was the first time that third year classes had made food on a catering level and many came back for seconds! The lunch raised £80 for the charity.
• Health Day
A health day for all first year pupils took place on Wednesday 19 March. The PE department organised this in partnership with Edinburgh Leisure. The emphasis of the day was on active and healthy lifestyles.
• Headteacher's update
I am delighted to inform you that our return visit from HMIe in late February drew a very positive response. Inspectors were very pleased with the progress made across the school. They commented on how impressed they had been with the huge advances made by the school since their visit in January 2006. Well done to everyone associated with Liberton High School!
