A roundup of news from Liberton High School.

Open Evening

The school welcomed almost 200 adults and youngsters to its Open Evening towards the end of last year.

Back on the Piste!

Liberton high school pupils are preparing for their Easter Ski trip with 5 weeks of tuition by qualified ski instructors.

A group of 16 pupils and well wrapped-up teachers braved a cold wintry evening at Midlothian Snowsports' Centre.

Most of the pupils opted for alpine ski instruction while the remainder chose snowboards.

The initial instruction, which lasted one-and-a-half hours, was completed by every pupil, all lasting through a squally sleet-shower.

However teacher & mini-bus driver supervised from the comfort of the Hillend's  360o café with a warming hot chocolate and a panoramic view of LHS students enjoying their first time on skis.

Eggsibition!

Second year class 2C spent many weeks leading up to Christmas working on a clay project making egg people. Characters made, ranged from Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and Oor Willie to santas, soldiers and Noddy.

The bodies of the egg people were made from moulds taken from plastic Easter egg packaging. Egg people have been made at Liberton for so long now that we are into our second generation of models.

Schools Construction Challenge

Ten S2 pupils participated in the first round of the Schools Construction Challenge at Telford College on 15 January.

The team of five boys and five girls had to complete a series of challenges which included constructing a tower and monoblocking. They performed admirably, working well as a unit and narrowly missed out on going through to the next round.

Thanks are due to Mr Hutchison for chauffeuring and accompanying the team.

So if you need a driveway laid or a roof joists fitted, feel free to contact Katie Shaw, Marvin Brandt, Fraser Murray, Daniel Kitson, Thomas Walker, Julia Hope, Emma Laidlaw, Lauren Bell, Emma McNaughton and Steven Flett!

Stevenson Partnership

For the remainder of the school session Liberton High School will be working in partnership with Stevenson College.

A physical education programme has been put in place to build on an already thriving PE curriculum.

Instructors from the college will come into school and deliver sessions on Body Training Systems, Funky Aerobics and Dance.

This means 2 hours of Core PE for every S5 and S6 pupil will be in place for the first time.  In addition to this. there will be provision for staff to get involved in a staff only class and there will be help with extra curricular classes also.

This is a great opportunity to strengthen existing links and we are very much looking forward to working with them in order to provide a curriculum which caters for all.

Scottish Schools Swimming

Andrea Sheen will represent Liberton High School at the Scottish Schools Swimming Finals on 26 January 2008.

This is a great achievement as the standard of swimmers at this event is very high indeed – in each event only the top 20 in the whole country make it to finals' day.

She is Liberton's only representative at this event and has always done us proud in the past.

She has one of the fastest entry times going into the competition and so will quite literally be going for gold! Good luck Andrea!

Heartstart

The programme continues in the school with S5 pupils currently being trained in the use of CPR.
