Liberton Primary School's nursery children were among many local groups to participate recently in the Barnardo's Big Toddle. The nationwide event raises money each year for disadvantaged children, last year generating £1.5million. South Edinburgh Echo: Marilyn retires from changing world of education after 20 years at Liberton Primary
Having moved to South Edinburgh 1985 and started life in the area as the parent of pupils who attended Liberton Primary School, Marilyn Taylor – who, having gained a teaching qualification, hadn't worked in education for 17 years – never thought that in summer 2008 she would retire having spent 20 years employed at the Gilmerton Road school.

A local nursery has benefited from the generosity of the Alnwickhill-based Territorial Army. A number of TA soldiers paid a visit to Mother Goose Nursery, Howdenhall Road, to construct a camouflaged hideaway after youngsters using the childcare facility had attempted to assemble something similar.

A Fernieside couple has made a generous donation to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children after devising an innovative fundraising scheme. Tommy and Jeanette Simpson, of Ferniehill Road, raised money over the Christmas period through a wishing well in their front garden, into which passers-by would drop money. A spectacular festive lighting display on and around their house helped to attract donations from generous local people.
