An interview with Kurt Stephens and his family.

Jonathan McCann: Kurt, which projects have you been involved in so far in your fledging career?   Kurt_2

Kurt: My first film was The Bicycle Thief, a local production. I played a ghost in a documentary for the Discovery Channel and I've recently been filming a show called 98% that should hopefully develop into a series.

JM: Which projects are you all working on at the moment?

Craig: We are making a horror film at the moment in which we play characters that are trapped inside a box and we are eaten by a zombie that lurks inside our maze! It is a short film and will add to Kurt's CV.

JM: Kurt, what inspired you to get involved in acting?

Kurt: The first film that I made was really the starting point for my interest in acting. My dad set up the role and I really enjoyed taking part in it.

JM: In the entertainment industry, parents can be very important in a young actor's development. How supportive have your parents been?

Kurt: They have been very important.

Craig: We try to help out both the boys but we are not like those pushy American parents who manipulate their children into taking part in something that they don't want to. Debbie and I will always read any script before letting the boys take up a role and if we don't feel the part is right, we will voice our concerns.

JM: Are there many facilities in South Edinburgh where actors can get a head start?

Debbie: We are looking into it. It would be good for the area if there were more facilities for anyone interested in acting to go to.

Craig: If the Government would put more money into developing arts in the South Edinburgh area, they would find that there are a lot of young people interested in acting and dancing in the region.

JM: What are your ambitions for Kurt's acting career?

Debbie: Kurt just loves acting and he just wants to keep doing it and see where the roads lead.

Craig: He's looking to make a wage out of it before we do as well!

JM: Kurt, who is your favourite actor?

Kurt: I am a big fan of Doctor Who and I really like David Tennant. I also like John Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who, The Producers).

JM: Finally. If you could have starred in one film from the last ten years, what would it have been?

Kurt: Definitely Spiderman!

• 98% will be shown at the Cannes, London and Edinburgh film festivals and is out now on DVD.
