Volunteers of all ages congregated at The Faith Mission, Gilmerton Road, at the end of May to launch a new photo exhibition.
The display, entitled 100 Faces of Volunteering, was compiled by the Volunteer Centre South Edinburgh (VCSE) and is intended to help celebrate volunteering in South Edinburgh and encourage more people to become involved in the community.
Consisting of portraits of 100 local volunteers, the display illustrates the wide age range and types of involvement across the area and features placements as diverse as disabled riding assistants and cycle path rangers to tea ladies and transport assistants.
Speaking at the launch, VCSE’s Nick Woodhead commented that he was surprised how easy he found it to locate 100 volunteers and that he was delighted that South Edinburgh had produced such a wealth of volunteering talent.
These sentiments were echoed by Mike Pringle MSP, who himself volunteers for Servas. While a lot of Mr Pringle’s comments were largely irrelevant to the assembled crowd, he was right in pointing out that communities rely on all sorts of volunteers and that everyone involved in this exhibition should be proud of their involvement in their community.
The exhibition will be touring local community centres and venues for the next few weeks. Anyone interested in local volunteering opportunities should contact Nick Woodhead on 0131 664 8511.
