South Edinburgh Echo: World beaters!

A world-famous South Edinburgh sporting name returned from April's World Field Archery Championships in Namibia with no fewer than nine medals to their name.

Drum Field Archers took 12 competitors to the African country's capital city of Windhoek and subsequently lost three of members to sunstroke or dehydration amid temperatures that reached 38 degrees celcius.

The remaining nine competitors all attained medal positions.

Pauline Ashall, one of the medal winners, was delighted with the club's performance in the event, which attracted archers from 34 countries.

She said, "We were a wee bit doubtful about what the medal positions would be because there was such strong competition from South Africa and Namibia, but we were delighted with the results.

"But I think we did really well. Scotland provided 14 archers altogether – 12 from Drum – and we ranked pretty high in the medal table."

The club will now concentrate on July's UK Championship in England, a competition that will see some 30 archers from Drum aiming to make a clean sweep of the medals on offer.

"Drum are favourites for pretty much all the UK medals," said Pauline. After England, we go to Wales for the European Championships in 2009 and then Germany in 2010 for the World Championships.

The club plays host to 30 young people and almost 40 adults who attend regular practice sessions.
